What is hybridization?

It is the process of intermixing of nearly same energy orbitals.Orbital is a place where the probability of finding the electron is maximum. To find the hybridization first count the number of electrons in the outermost shell of individual atoms. Now the bond is formed with 8 electrons,so divide the total number of electrons. The quotient is the number of bond pairs and the remainder is the number of lone pairs.
If 2 bond pairs-sp
If 3 bond pairs-sp2
If 4 bond pairs-sp3ordsp2
If 5 bond pairs-sp3d
If 6 bond pairs-sp3d2
and so on.

In chemistry, orbital hybridization is the mixing of atomic orbitals to form new orbitals suitable for bonding.

The hybridization theory was promoted by chemist Linus Pauling in order to explain the structure of molecules such as methane (CH4).

It is the technique which farmers employ to produce a better plant species by crossing the genes of two genetically dissimilar plants.
This way two desirable characteristics are obtained from two different plants and a better crop is obtained which produces better yield.

Hybridization involves crossing plants of different strains or types to combine in the progeny the desirable traits of both parents. Undesirable traits also enter the combination, however, so hybridization is usually followed by several generations of selection. This allows breeders to discard undesirable plants, choosing for further propagation only those plants with the desired combination of traits.

When a plant or animal is bred with a plant or animal from different stock, the process is known as hybridization. There are numerous reasons to create hybrids, including increasing genetic diversity and breeding for specific traits. Hybridization is frequently practiced in agriculture, to make stronger, healthier plants with desirable characteristics. Animal breeders also use hybridization to create new breeds or to try to breed out unwanted traits, such as hip dysplasia in some purebred dogs.
